Running is one of the most simple activities you can do. You can do it just about anywhere as long as you have a pair of shoes. That’s true. But, to truly make the most out of your running – there are some more items you should have.   Here are my Top 5:

1. Shoes. Not just any pair of shoes – but a decent pair of shoes with good stability and cushionng is a must.  Your running life will depend on it. As a side note, it’s also a good idea to have 2 pair that you’re running in at the same time. Wear one pair, then your other pair the next time you run. This gives each pair ample time to dry out before you wear them again.

2. Socks. A good pair of moisture-wicking socks will keep your feet dry even after several miles. This will help keep blisters away.

3. Shirt. You may have great looking cotton race t-shirts, but wear them around after running. Cotton is not ideal for running. You want to wear shirts with moisture-wicking material. This material absorbs sweat from the body and keeps your temperature low. During cold weather – there are compression materials which will keep the heat in. Also, during cold weather – layering is a great idea. A general rule of thumb is to check the temperature before you head out and dress as if it’s 10 degrees warmer.

4. Shorts. Shorts also come in materials that are specially designed to be moisture-wicking. Another thing that I always look for is a key pocket inside.

5. Running Watch. This is an item that you definitely need – and you can get as sophisticated as you want. You can get a simple watch that records time and lap times – which is great for beginners. After running for a while, you’ll want to upgrade to a model which will do more. I wear a GPS watch that will also tell me the distance I’ve covered, mile splits, my pace and more. I especially like to use it when I’m training for longer races and when I’m out of town and don’t know the distances.

You can spend as much money as you want on other running gadgets……but these are the 5 that I feel are a necessity. Feel free to leave a comment on what you can’t run without.
